How to keep the kids entertained this October half-term

By Valeria Pinasco

With half-term here, keeping the kids entertained can sometimes feel like a full-time job. But autumn brings plenty of simple ways to fill the days, whether you’re heading outside for some fresh air, getting creative at home or simply making the most of a cosy afternoon together. From pumpkin carving and apple picking to woodland walks and craft sessions, here are our five favourite ways to make the most of the October half-term break.

5 fun family activities to try

Try pumpkin carving

Get the kids excited for Halloween by carving your own pumpkins. From a classic crooked smile and spooky eyes to more adventurous designs, pumpkin carving is a great excuse to get creative together. Pop a battery-operated tea light inside once you’re finished and you’ve got your very own Halloween lantern ready to light up the evening.

And don’t throw away the good stuff! Pumpkin flesh is delicious in soups, stews and plenty of autumnal dishes, while the seeds can be seasoned and roasted for a crunchy snack to enjoy while you carve.

Go apple picking

There’s something so special about picking your own food, and autumn is the perfect time to set out on a fruit-picking adventure. While wild blackberry season may be over, apple orchards across the country are bursting with fruit, with plenty offering pick-your-own sessions throughout the season.

Make a day of it and challenge the family to see who can fill their basket first. Then, once you’re home, the fun doesn’t have to stop. Bake an apple crumble or pie with the kids, or try making caramel apples for a sweet Bonfire Night treat.

Step outside

Autumn might bring a little more rain, but that’s no reason to spend the whole week indoors. Pull on your wellies, wrap up in your raincoats and head out for an adventure. Explore your local woodland or park, look out for changing leaves and see who can find the biggest pile to jump into.

Take a flask of hot chocolate along for a warming treat and keep an eye out for pine cones, interesting leaves and other treasures to bring home for your next craft project.

Think outside the box

If, however, the weather has other plans, bring the fun indoors and give our iconic Mindful Chef boxes a new lease of life. Get out the colouring pens, pencils and glue – they make the perfect canvas for drawing, decorating and creating together. You could even transform them into spooky Halloween masks to complete the kids’ costumes before trick-or-treating.

Settle in for a cosy afternoon

Of course, not every half-term day needs to be packed with activities. Sometimes the simplest plans are the best. As the temperature drops and the evenings get darker, it’s get comfortable on the sofa, wrap up in your favourite blankets and put on a much-loved family film.

Make it feel extra special with fairy lights, tea lights and, of course, a big mug of hot chocolate topped with plenty of fluffy marshmallows. Add some favourite snacks to the mix and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a cosy autumn day.
