We can’t wait for the second Mindful Chef Coast Clean, particularly because of our exciting partnership with the Marine Conservation Society this year!
WHO ARE THE MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY?
On September 19th 2020 we’re hosting our Mindful Chef Coast Clean! This year we have extended the clean to include parks, rivers and woodlands and have already had over 200 local heroes sign-up. We’ve also partnered with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) as part of The Great British Beach Clean to drive awareness and encourage even more people to take part.
The MCS are the UK’s leading marine charity, protecting our seas for over thirty years. We’re very excited to be working with them, as not only does it mean we can clean up more of our coastline, but the data from our cleans will be tracked through a survey, helping to contribute towards shaping government and business policy to support marine life for the future.
SUCCESSES OF THE MCS…
- The 5p plastic bag charge
The MCS were at the forefront of convincing the Government that a charge on single-use plastic bags was crucial in the UK, which came to fruition in 2015. This followed on from the introduction of the policy in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- MCS Good Fish Guide
Launched in 2002, the Good Fish Guide is now a vital tool for industry, chefs and consumers. It sets out clear guidance by ranking fish from green to red based on sustainability, allowing consumers to make informed choices and reduce our impact so that seafood can be enjoyed by future generations.
- Marine Conservation Zones set up in England (MCZ)
Marine Conservation Zones are areas that protect a variety of nationally important, rare or threatened habitats and species. After a march by the MCS and their supporters to the UK Parliament in 2013, 27 MCZs were established in English Seas. A further 23 were set up in 2015, and 41 in 2019, taking the total to 91 in England!
THANK YOU!
We want to say a massive thank you to all of our community who have signed up to the #MCCoastClean. We feel it is particularly important this year due to the sharp rise in single use plastics from Coronavirus, as well as the impacts that the easing of lockdown has brought, with large amounts of litter being left on beauty spots across the UK.
We can’t wait to see all of your Coast Clean photos on the day, don’t forget to tag @MindfulChefUK + #MCCoastClean. Let’s make a difference to turn the plastic tide.
Not yet signed up? Email Alice on [email protected] with your chosen location and we’ll send more info along with your exclusive #MCCoastClean pack.
