We’re proud to announce that together we’ve hit another milestone – donating 5 million school meals to children living in poverty! That’s the equivalent of feeding 25,000 school children for an entire year. Check out the life-changing impact your donations are having in the video below.
How does it work?
We’re the only recipe box to operate on a one-for-one charity model. For every MC meal you enjoy, we donate a school meal to a child in
Malawi.
Without the support of our community and our charity partner, One Feeds Two, none of this would be possible – a huge, heartfelt thank you. We were lucky enough to visit Malawi last year and see these school feeding programmes in action.
From the village chief to volunteer cooks and teachers, everyone we met from the community shared their story and why every meal makes a real difference. For many children, it’s their only meal of the day. So not only do feeding programs tackle hunger head-on, but they also boost school attendance, support long-term education and have the ability to lift communities out of poverty without creating a dependency.
What is phala?
One question we see cropping up a lot is why the children are fed porridge. Locally known as phala, it’s made from a blend of corn and soy, which is then fortified with essential vitamins to support the children’s nutritional requirements.
Not only is it in keeping with the local cuisine, corn and soy are also grown in abundance – so this benefits local farmers too, helping to support the wider community. The shelf life is long, it’s cost-effective and can be easily cooked in large batches to make the best use of volunteers’ time. Myles and Giles said it tasted delicious too!
