But this year, I’m bringing it home. I’m here to put a little bit more effort into dinner time.

Valentine’s doesn’t have to be about romantic love, it can be all kinds of love, a night in with the kids, a takeaway with your dog (fancy it Barry?), the friends who’ve seen you through everything, the people you can talk to for hours, and the ones who make even an ordinary weeknight feel like a moment. This year I’m sitting down with Jon for a proper catch up. Two busy parents like passing ships in the night, but not tonight. And the best part? Creating a Valentine’s set-up at home doesn’t need to be complicated. With a few simple styling tricks, you can turn dinner into something that feels special, effortless, and completely you.

Start with a simple colour story

The easiest way to make a table feel “done” is to choose a colour palette and stick to it. For date night, I’ll lean into the classics, soft pinks, reds, warm neutrals but i’ll add in a colour maybe more unexpected, but it doesn’t have to be obvious or overly themed. Even just one bold colour paired with crisp white plates can feel elevated.

Layer your table like an outfit

A good tablescape is all about layering. Think of your table like you would an outfit: a base, a few key pieces, and one standout accessory. Start with a tablecloth, runner, or even a large scarf or fabric you already own. Then add placemats or napkins to build texture. Linen always works beautifully, but you can mix materials too, cotton, rattan, ceramics, it all adds interest.

Candles are non-negotiable

If there’s one thing that instantly makes a set-up feel romantic (in the broadest sense of the word), it’s candlelight. Use a mix of heights: taper candles for drama, pillar candles, or one larger candle as a centrepiece. And if you’re worried about wax, place candles on small dishes or coasters to protect the table.

Keep flowers low and relaxed

Flowers don’t need to be expensive or formal. A few supermarket stems can look incredible if you split them into smaller vases or scatter them down the table in flower frogs. The key is keeping arrangements low enough that you can still see each other and talk across the table without a bouquet blocking the conversation.

Add a personal touch

This is where the magic happens.
