Before we go into whether saturated fats are healthy, it’s good to start with what they actually are.

Saturated fats are a type of dietary fat that are typically solid at room temperature.

Eating small amounts of saturated fats is generally thought of to be ok as part of a healthy diet, but ask any doctor, heart consultant and dietitian and they’ll no doubt tell you that consuming too much saturated fat can increase the risk of health problems, such as heart disease.

Foods high in saturated fat include butter, cheese, fatty meats, and coconut oil.

Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats like those found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils, has been shown to have health benefits and lower the risk of heart disease. So, while saturated fats may be consumed in moderation, it’s generally recommended to choose healthier fats as the primary source of dietary fat.

The good news is that here at Mindful Chef, you can see the nutritional breakdown (fats, carbs, protein and calories) on every single one of our recipes, so you know exactly what you’re cooking.
